Nyanga Man Sentenced to 19 Years for Stock Theft

Nyanga resident Senard Magodi, aged 29, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for his involvement in two separate incidents of stock theft, with one year of the sentence suspended upon the payment of USD 300 in restitution. Magodi’s sentencing follows his guilty plea to the charges, marking a stern response by the court to the growing issue of livestock theft in rural areas.

The first incident occurred on April 13, 2024, when Magodi stole a heifer from a 40-year-old man in Pfigu Village. He quickly sold the stolen animal to another villager in Nyanga, believing that the transaction would go unnoticed. However, on August 20, 2024, the original owner managed to recover the heifer, and this return prompted the new owner to report the situation to the authorities, leading to Magodi’s arrest.

As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Magodi had not acted alone but had carried out a similar theft on the same evening. The second incident involved another heifer, this time stolen from a 49-year-old woman. Magodi once again sold the animal to an unsuspecting villager, further implicating himself in multiple crimes.

In court, Magodi was sentenced to nine years for the first theft and ten years for the second, bringing the total to 19 years. However, the court suspended one year of the sentence on the condition that Magodi pays USD 300 in restitution. Ultimately, Magodi will serve a total of nine years in prison, a punishment that reflects the gravity of his actions and serves as a warning to others who might consider engaging in similar criminal activities.
