Mkoba 5 residents witnessed an unusual spectacle on August 18 as a herd of cattle, accompanied by their herd boy, made their way through the neighborhood. The cattle, which had escaped from a nearby farm close to Antelope Park, caused a stir among locals, who gathered at their doorsteps to watch the scene unfold.
Reactions ranged from praise to anger, with some residents expressing concern for safety. “Ndizvo zvinokonzera maaccidents izvi!” (This is what causes accidents!) shouted one bystander. Another resident chimed in, “Haa mombe haungadzigoni iwe, ipapa dzinenge dzarara dzichifamba. Aita luck aitogona dzodestroyer maasset evanhu” (These cattle are not supposed to be here, they will cause chaos and damage).
Others were more humorous, with one resident joking, “Mombe dzotodawo kuona town manje kuno kughetto tinodzigocha” (I thought we were getting a new delivery of beef, but it looks like they’re just on a sightseeing tour) Another quipped, “I hope they’re not here for the Mkoba 5 braai festival, we’re not ready for that!”
Others were more sympathetic, with one resident advising, “Watodziwana kutodzichengetedza dzisarasika futi” (Just be careful and make sure they don’t get lost again). A young man inquired, “What does the law say about this?” highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the situation. However, the authorities were nowhere to be found during the incident.
The herd boy, tasked with containing the situation, faced a daunting challenge as he attempted to guide the cattle through the urban terrain. Fortunately, he contained the situation without any damage or accidents reported.
