In a case that has shocked Chipinge, Theophelous Sabondo, a 37-year-old local, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for culpable homicide after a deadly hit-and-run incident. The sentencing came after a harrowing episode that unfolded in the early hours of February 24, 2024.
Sabondo, behind the wheel of a grey Nissan sedan, was driving towards Chipinge town in the dead of night when he encountered a group of pedestrians at Nyaukari River. In a chilling display of negligence, Sabondo reportedly hooted at the pedestrians, causing them to scatter in a frantic attempt to escape. In the chaos, he struck one of the pedestrians and then callously fled the scene.
The victim, who was left injured by the reckless driver, battled for his life for two weeks before succumbing to his injuries. Meanwhile, Sabondo did not stop to offer aid or report the accident but chose instead to drive off into the night. He only turned himself in to the authorities two hours later, after the damage had been done.
In court, the evidence against Sabondo painted a grim picture of his disregard for human life. He was found guilty of several grave lapses: failing to keep a proper lookout, driving excessively fast, neglecting to exercise due care around other road users, abandoning the scene of a serious accident, and neglecting to provide assistance to the injured.
The court’s decision, delivered with a sense of gravity, sentenced Sabondo to 30 months behind bars. However, in a move that has sparked some controversy, 12 months of the sentence were suspended for five years. Additionally, Sabondo faces a driving ban for the next 10 months, a consequence that reflects the severity of his actions.
