Gokwe-A violent attack in Village Karikoga, under Chief Sayi, has left a 72-year-old man and his 27-year-old daughter critically injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 20, 2024.
It is said Mailet Chikwiko, (27), and her husband, Matare Karikoga, (46) were involved in a domestic dispute that led Mailet to leave for her parents’ home on August 19.
Early the next morning, Matare tracked his wife to the Chikwiko homestead. At around 1:00 AM, he forcibly entered the room where Mailet was sleeping and attacked her with an axe, inflicting severe injuries to her head and body.
Hearing his daughter’s cries for help, Solomon Chikwiko, (72) attempted to intervene but was also brutally assaulted by Matare. The assailant struck Solomon repeatedly on the head and hands with the axe before turning to Mailet again, this time assaulting her with a stick.
Both Solomon and Mailet Chikwiko were rushed to Gokwe District Hospital, where they are currently being treated for their serious injuries.
Midlands Pronvicial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident and is appealing for information regarding the suspects whereabouts.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) urges the public to seek non-violent methods for resolving conflicts and to report any information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspect.” Mahoko said.
